Es imposible no estremecerse con este Strange Fruit, una canción descarnada sobre el racismo, con esos "extraños frutos" que se balancean las ramas de los árboles sureños, los cuerpos de los linchados. Carmen McRae la incluyó en su disco de homenaje a Billie Holiday, grabado en Nueva York en 1961 y aparrecido al año siguiente. Como ya había hecho Holiday, McRae le dio a la canción un aire de sencillez, de cotidiana, precisamente para intensificar el dramatismo de los linchamientos.
